Developments in Barolo and Barbaresco
From 2001, the influential house of Gaja has declassified its best crus of Barolo and Barbaresco to the broader appellation of Langhe. This allows other varietals (Barbera, Dolcetto, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) to be included. In particular, about 5% of Barbera is added to the Barbarescos to achieve greater freshness in hot vintages (especially for wines from vineyards with Southern exposure).
