Campania is around Naples. Vines are grown in pergola fashion, with very little DOC production. Viticulture has been in decline, with plantings declining and the DOC regulations ignored. Traditional varietals include Aglianico, Fiano, Greco di Tufo and Falanghina. Some successful wines include the red Taurasi, which is claimed to have aging potential and is sometimes called the Barolo of the South, and the two white varietals: Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, grown in the hills east of Naples. The best known white from the region is Lacrimi Christie del Vesuvio. Actually this is a label that covers a variety of style, from dry to sweet, and there are also red, rosé, and sparkling versions, none well regarded. More recently there has been improvement due to introduction of better techniques and some efforts with international varieties such as Chardonnay.
