Condrieu overview
Condrieu and Ch. Grillet (which is an extremely small, adjacent appellation) make only white wine, exclusively from Viognier. Condrieu fell into disrepair, and by the 1970s as little as 5 ha remained planted, with vines being replaced by apricots and other fruits. A revival led by Georges Vernay led to replanting, and now there are 100 producers, almost half of whom bottle their own wine. The house of Guigal currently account for 30% of production. Condrieu is ~120 ha, and Ch. Grillet is only ~4 ha. Most of the vineyards of Condrieu are on the hillsides on the Western side of the Rhône. There is an unusual soil consisting of decomposed rock. Château Grillet has a circle of vineyards with Southern exposure and a soil of very fine decomposed granite
