Controliran The region is stated on label, and this is equivalent to QWPSR classification of the EU. Region wines are supposed to represent the conditions and traditions of a Bulgarian region. There are 26 Controliran regions. The features that are controlled include geographical microregion, grape varietal, viticulture, vinification including levels of alcohol, acidity and sugar. The wines are tasted and chemically tested by a committee. Quality must be maintained over three consecutive vintages. The original definition was that Controliran wines can be called Reserve if the vintage is superior to average and the wine has been aged in oak barrels for at least three years for white and four for red. (DGO wines could be called Reserve with one year less). However, the law was changed in 1997 to allow Reserve to be used to describe wines or superior quality irrespective of period in wood. The difference between DGO and Controliran in a given area may be that the Controliran comes from a specified vineyard or that the grape variety is different (Suhindol Cabernet Sauvignon is DGO but Suhindol Gamza is Controliran.
