Cornas is ~70 ha and has the usual granite base with a clay topsoil. The wines are exclusively red. It tends to be planted with high production Syrah clones. It is quite well sheltered, which increases temperatures. Fermentation conditions vary between traditional and new, as elsewhere in the Northern Rhône. Typically it spends 18-24 months in oak. Traditionally Cornas has been a big wine, reflecting the production from old vines. The best are close to Hermitage in quality. It can be black and tannic when young. Drinkable from ~8 years, it may last for 20 years.
