La Mancha is the largest DO in Spain, and accounts for half of the land area of the province. It is a large, flat area, with homogeneous terrain. Significant investment since the 1980s has led to the introduction of temperature-controlled stainless steel fermenters, which together with better control of harvesting the grapes, has led to more modern, fruity wines. There has been an increase in the relative production of red wines.
