Meritage is used in California to describe wine that have blends of grape varietals resembling those used in Bordeaux. The term was invented to combine "merit" with "heritage. " For reds, the grapes allowed are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Malbec; for whites, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon may be used.
