Navarra is the most Northern wine-growing region in Spain, extending from a Northerly boundary at the base of the Pyrenees Mountains to the Ebro river basin. The more Northern parts are more elevated and cooler than the Southern parts, Ribera Alta and Ribera Baja, which are flatter and warmer. The Ribera Baja region has recently been given its own DO, called Ribera del Queiles. The general climate in Navarra is Continental with relatively low rainfall, but humidity can be high. The focus is on black varietals; total production is 50% red, 40% rosado, and only 10% white. Tempranillo and Garnacha Tinta make up the majority (>70%) of the black grapes, but there is also some Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a little Graciano. Plantings of Tempranillo are replacing Garnacha, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are being planted in other sites. The whites are Viura, Moscatel, and Chardonnay. Vines are pruned according to local climate as Guyot, cordon, and en vaso. There is a move toward mechanical harvesting. Modern methods of vinification are being introduced.
