Catalunya Penedès

Penedès owes its development to the Torres winery. The low Penedès is a hot region producing ordinary wines. The best wines come from the middle Penedès, at elevations of 250-500 meters. The Alt Penedès runs from 500-800 meters. Lower soils are sandy, with more limestone going up the slopes. The climate varies from Mediterranean at low Penedès to more Continental higher up. Many grape varieties include standard Spanish grapes. Spanish varietals are kept en vaso, the French by Guyot or cordon. Whites are successful, and the reds are developing Tempranillo/Cabernet blends with less emphasis on oak and more fruit showing.
