Pests and diseases: overview

  • Diseases of the grapevine can be classified into infectious and noninfectious. Noninfectious diseases are due to environmental conditions, e.g. chlorosis caused by chalky soil. Infectious diseases are caused by viroids, viruses, bacteria, and fungi, sometimes capable of directly infecting the grapevine, sometimes being carried by an insect vector. The measure of an infectious disease is that the infecting organism actually lives within the grapevine.
  • Pests are living agents that attack the grapevine from the exterior; they include nematodes, insects (especially spiders and phylloxera), and animals. Some pests are vectors for disease, such as Pierce's disease, where the infectious bacterium is carried by the sharpshooter.
