Classification of Cognac
The age of Cognac is measured by the compte system. Immediately after distillation (in November), the Cognac is Compte 00. On the 1st April following, it becomes Compte 0, and then it increases by 1 each April 1 thereafter. Compte 6 is the oldest designation, which means that no Cognac age greater than 6 years is guaranteed by the appellation. The labeling of the cognac is determined by the compte:
