Vintage assessments for Champagne from 1988 to 2007

2005The winter was mild, hot July, cool August, and then rain caused dilution in September. Results are decent but not outstanding.
2004***Compensating for the small yield in 2003, the 2004 vintage was large, of high quality because it was saved by a very fine September (unusual in the Champagne region).
2003***Half of the crop was destroyed in a frost in mid April, with the worst losses in the early-developing Chardonnay and in Pinot Noir, so the crop will be very small and largely consisting of Pinot Meunier.
200285C***85-90Poor August created expectations of feeble vintage, but sunny weather with no rain saved the vintage in September. Wines are low in acid but rich in alcohol. May make good Blanc de Noirs since Pinot Noir did best this year.
200160D*35An unusually poor vintage, not likely to be an vintage Champagne production
200080C****80A ripe vintage but not quite up to usual standard for vintage, although Millenium madness may lead to more vintage Champagne than might otherwise have been the case.
199975D***80Ripe but spoiled by very high acidity.
