2004Very good year, crop levels increased after the smaller vintage of 2003, good sugar levels achieved in the grapes.
200388High temperatures and drought created difficulties; although the grapes did remain healthy, many became overripe.
200280This was the year of record rainfall in Eastern Europe, Northern Italy, and the South of France. The vintage in Barolo was ruined by a hailstorm in September. The wines are expected to be rather light and to lack concentration.
200192-961894An unusually cool period at the end of September made a late harvest, but the grapes were ripe and rich. A very good vintage, in fact recognized in the region as better and more classical than the preceding vintage which was touted by the Wine Spectator.
200095B100 /Drink/Hold1990Similar to 1999 but more fruit and considered by most to be a better vintage, although a minority view regards it as atypical in the mold of 1997, that is, too forward and fruity to be typical of the region.
199989B90T92 /Drink/Hold** drink soon1896Some considered this vintage to be not as good as 1998, others that it is a truly classical vintage, with wines that are rather hard at the outset, requiring some aging before they open.
199892B96E93 /Drink/Hold***** hold19A great year, but more classical than the previous year. Big wines, lots of fruits, high tannins, good acidity, and very long lived. The ?modernization? of Barolo makes these wines much more approachable than they would have been in an earlier decade.
199792B94E99 /Hold***** drink soon18Considered a vintage of the century in all of Northern Italy, the grapes were exceptionally ripe, with record sugar in the grapes, giving very big wines with forward fruits, and lower acids than usual. Some consider that these wines do not represent the traditional values of Barolo, given their early approachability, softness, and forward fruit.
199691B95T98 /Hold***** hold18A classical year gave ripe grapes with wines of good color, high levels of alcohol, acid and tannins. The best wines require cellaring for many more years.
199589B87C87 Drink/Hold***** hold17Small crop but high quality except where hailstorms spoiled the crop. Considered big wines at the time, but now mature and at their peak, with tannins resolved.
199477C77C77 / Drink** drink soon14Disastrous year with the vintage ruined by heavy rain, very few producers made drinkable wine, almost all now past their peak.
199386C86E87 / Drink/Hold**** drink now16
199275C74C76 / Drink* drink now13Rain fell late in September when the grapes were ripening, causing dilution in the wines.
199175C76E77 / Drink*** drink soon15Rain fell early in September before the grapes had ripened, resulting in rather hard, angular wines.
199096B96E97 / Hold***** hold
198995B96E97 / Hold***** drink soon19The best of a series of three classic years (1988, 1989, 1990) with wines that are now evolving well, the tannins resolving, and fruits maturing to give beautifully balanced, elegant wines.
198890C90T90 / Drink/Hold**** drink soon19
