The Gewürztraminer grape Gewürztraminer has high skin pigments, so the wines are often deeply colored (mid gold from Alsace). It does well in cool climates and is the most widely planted of the four noble varietals in Alsace.
Winemaking with Gewürztraminer Usually fermented in old oak in Alsace. Malolactic fermentation is usually suppressed. It gives relatively low yields.
The taste of Gewürztraminer Gewürztraminer has intense grapeyaromas, showing spicy, perfumed notes of lychees and roses. There is high alcohol and low acid. It is fermented to dryness, giving the characteristic "smells sweet, tastes dry", except for late harvest wines (where the intensity of roses and lychees may be reduced by botrytis).
