Müller-Thurgau is a cross made in Germany in 1882 between Riesling and Chasselas (it had previously been thought to be a cross with Sylvaner or even Riesling). It is the most widely planted grape in Germany. It grows easily and is more frost-resistant than Riesling. It is also grown in Austria, New Zealand, and the Northwest section of the US. It is the base wine for many commercial blends in Germany. As a varietal, it has a floral aroma and gives a pleasant wine for early consumption. Labeled as Rivaner, it is vinified in a drier style more suitable to accompany food.
