The Pinot Blanc grape
Pinot Blanc (also known as Weissburgunder) is derived from Pinot Noir, possibly via Pinot Gris. Pinot Blanc has a deletion of the active allele of a skin color gene that is heterozygous in Pinot Noir. Like all Pinots, there is significant variability between different clones, notably with regard to yield.

The taste of Pinot Blanc
Pinot Blanc is often treated like Chardonnay, and may be aged in barriques in the New World or in Germany. But in this guise it mostly resembles a weaker version of Chardonnay. In Alsace it is often blended with Auxerrois and is regarded as one of the weakest of the planted varieties. It is generally rather unassertive and neutral.
